Homework:
Hymnology: "God's Word is Our Great Heritage"
We learned this hymn today. We will sing it all week and say it for memory work on Friday. You can find the words in the back flap of their folder or in their green memory work book. Please leave the hymn worksheet in that back part of the folder. We use that sheet all week to practice at school and you will always know where it is when you practice at home.
Math: 3B
A couple other really great reminders... Thank you parents for helping me.
Money: Please make sure all money is sent to school in an envelope labeled where it goes or what it is for. That is the best way to make sure it gets to the right place.
Homework from the return to school side of the folder should be returned the following day. It is usually a Christ Light sheet or a Math sheet. I understand parents sometimes have busy nights and cannot get everything in. That is fine once in a while. Please always return the homework even if it is not finished. There is usually time to finish it during the day or else I can send it back home to finish. This just helps keep better records and helps the students to stay current with the rest of the class.
First Week: I am so proud of the First Graders. They are already catching on to procedures and learning to follow the rules. It is not easy at first. Being at home with a few children is very different than a large group so there are many things we have to do differently. They have really impressed me this week. I am also impressed with the parents. You guys are doing a great job too!! Keep it up. It is going to be a great year!

Christ Light: John Is Born
Memory Work: Galatians 4:4
So far everyone is doing very well. There is a lot to remember and everyone is improving everyday!
Just Clarifying a few things: We are learning too! :)
The Christ Light Sheet with the story on it should be returned the next day. Many times there are activities on the back that we discuss or I like to see. I will put a sticker on it and return the next day.
The Green Memory Treasure books can stay home. Find a safe place for it. I do not think they will last if they bring it back and forth each day. I will always circle the memory work to do on the back of the Christ Light sheet and try to put it on the blog. You can also see which memory work is due because it is listed by story in the Green Memory Treasure Book.
Shoe tying: As part of them being responsible and independent in First Grade we expect that they can tie their shoes by now or at least be pretty close. This is not something we teach at school. This is something to be taught at home. We will help them somewhat, but we really push them to do it themselves. We change shoes several times a day so they really need to be able to tie and untie all of their shoes. They are really sad when they can't get it right and it takes forever, so please work with them to master this skill. If they are not ready to be mostly independent then do not send them with tie shoes yet, but keep working on it at home. Time them to see if they can improve on their time. I even told them to practice by tying up their parents for fun. Tying knots is a skill they often need in art as well. They get very frustrated if they can't do it well. Keep working on it.
Math 2B: The B side of the Math page is for you to do at home. Please help them read it even if they think they can do it by themselves. The directions are often very similar as on the first page, but often have a few differences that a young reader may not catch. Also, It is good to have crayons and pencils at home to do their homework. I would prefer they did not use pens or markers.
Lunch: The kids are doing a great job opening their food and eating independently. I am very proud of them for just the 2nd day. Please make sure you practice new containers with them and also pack a spoon or fork if they need it. It is also a good idea to always pack a napkin to wipe their faces or clean up a spill. I am also really loving how healthy their snacks are. It is good to discuss that at home. Have them know which is the healthy snack for snack time. Which order would be a good order to eat their food in. They are really figuring this out already, but sometimes it is tricky and sometimes it doesn't matter.

We had a Fabulous First Day!!!
Memory Books should stay home permanently. They will not make it through the year otherwise. I will circle the memory work on the back of the Christ Light sheet.
Today was John 3:16
Please read through the story with your child. If and when they can read have them read with you or to you. For now, make sure you are following with a finger and they are watching so that they can learn it themselves. It is amazing how much they can pick up after a while..
Gym Shoes: We need those right away. It may rain tomorrow. Please bring them soon.

Welcome to First Grade!
Please find a time to meet with me briefly if you did not go to Cruise on In Night. I want you to know what is going on in our room this year.
Feel free to walk your children in to the classroom this week to get them used to coming in to school. After that we will leave them at the door or end of the hallway to help them be independent.
I am excited for the First day of school!!
